Gay martial arts
IAGLMA is short for the International Association of Gay and Lesbian Martial Arts, a nonprofit gay martial arts organization originally formed at the Gay Games III in 1990, in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
Their mission is to reach out to gays and lesbians, teaching them the arts of self-defense in a world where alternative lifestyles aren't always accepted.
IAGLMA accepts gay martial artists from all around the world, from the lesbians roaming the streets in America to the gay guys affianced and planning their pilgrimage to Vermont. It's like they can start the training as soon as they get off their honeymoon in Hawaii.
They have all kinds of programs...on the mat, real world situation simulations, basic stuff like that. If you ask nicely-or just get the right trainer-you could probably do some special wrestling lessons with your partner. It's also a possibility that you can do judo and get a mat at your house for practice sessions outside of the dojo. It'd be nice and simple...just try a leg sweep and knock him/her down, then switch right over to wrestling. Nothing to it-but be careful with the flowerpots, they can break.
There are all kinds of opportunities for gay martial artists out there. They have competitive and non-competitive programs, including the biggest forms of martial arts and some of the lesser-known as well. They're just like equal-opportunity educators, they're dedicated to provide the education in self-defense that you want as a gay or lesbian. But they also teach supporters of the gay martial arts movement as well.
The supporters of the gay martial arts movements are probably accepted almost as readily, if not more readily, than the gays and lesbians themselves. Even in this day and age, gays and lesbians need all the allies they can get just to keep going on with their lifestyles safely. As you know, a lot of people aren't too fond of gays and lesbians, so to openly display yourself as such is dangerous. To support it when you're not gay is probably just as dangerous as being gay openly. For the love of God, no matter what, if you're not gay, then don't tell people that you are! But that's a long story that doesn't have anything to do with this one. So just remember, even if you're not gay, the gay martial arts would be a great-and unforgettable-experience...especially for the gay guy.
