What are general mixed martial arts?
General mixed martial arts are a combat sport that uses many different fighting techniques, including striking or grappling, which also means to handle and control an opponent without hitting. The popular idea of mixed martial arts has been around since the early 1990s, with the beginning of the Ultimate Fighting Championship which gave the opportunity of martial artists to use this different fighting style against their opponents in a competition.
In the late 1990s mixed martial arts started to implement new rules in order to promote safety within the fighting. These new rules not only made it safer for the athletes to partake in the sport, but it also made it work acceptable to the media and the public. Since the interest in the sport continues to grow, pay-per-view television has set new records with these championship fights. Many championship fights contain general mixed martial arts or even special styles with different techniques or cultural backgrounds.
General mixed martial arts can be found as far back as the 1920s in Asia and South America. The sport became popular as the concept of mixing various martial arts styles together grew, and martial art icons such as Bruce Lee became an international actions star. Through the decades exposure to mixed martial arts has continued to become more and more popular throughout the world. Each organization has its own set of rules, but the general mixed martial arts have been known to have very limited rules if any at all in the past.
Mixed martial arts usually fall into two categories based on techniques. Some artists use styles that incorporate striking techniques such as kicking or punching while grappling techniques utilize holds or takedowns. While the rules may be limited in general mixed martial arts, there are illegal moves such as biting, small joint manipulation or eye gouging which are acceptable under all conditions. A victory each competition is based on a judge's decision after certain amount of time has passed or a winner has made a clear winning.
While general mixed martial arts has had a reputation for being intense or brutal, championships are usually under control. As with any sport, a death while playing the game usually happens due to a pre-existing condition but in the event that it happens because of the sport, it is often one of the hazards that come with playing a contact game.
