Martial Arts Training Dummy

Many people are not aware that practicing with a martial arts training dummy is one of the best ways to train.

Training in several martial arts forms requires the student to practice attack moves on either living or stationary objects. One of the most effective ways to do this is on a dummy. We're not talking about your younger brother here, were talking about a wooden dummy, such as the kind that has been used for centuries in ancient China. First developed by the Shaolin monks of China, a martial arts training dummy is typically made of a large piece of upright wood that look similar to a thin telephone pole. From this telephone pole pieces of wood that look like arms and legs jut out from the surface, mimicking arms and legs of opponents.

A wooden martial arts training dummy is used to help develop arm and leg coordination, judging distances, teaching footwork, and most especially, teaching martial arts students how to flow smoothly from one move to another. Sure, you'll end up with a few bruises when you first start practicing on a wooden dummy, but this will only help to toughen your skin and get you used to the amount of force that needs to be applied when facing an opponent who can hit back.

Another name for such wooden dummies is called Wing Chun. Using such a dummy can be beneficial to a wide variety of martial art forms, including karate, kung fu, tae kwon do and others. It is also a great way to develop fighting skills and coordination. Martial arts training dummy styles and models come in different materials, and can be geared to just about any training situation or method. Such dummies serve to enhance accuracy, because the student needs to learn how to correctly position the body in relation to any opponent in order to create effect of strikes and kicks.

There are various drills that are required when practicing with a wooden dummy, and muscle memory is one of the many benefits that are generated from using such a practice partner in any training. While many wooden dummies can be quite expensive, they are priceless when it comes to effective and superlative training techniques that combine footwork and arm movements that will teach students how to both attack and deflect other attacks while developing additional martial arts skills including speed and form. The martial arts training dummy is one of the most valuable pieces of equipment any serious student can own.
