Zen Martial Arts

Most people don't associate the Zen with martial arts, but as a

matter of fact, Zen martial arts are popular around the world. Most people think of Zen as meditation, special breathing techniques, as well as Zen gardens where people scatter sand with miniature rakes and don't move it for fear of upsetting the balance of life. However, Zen martial arts have a very important place in many martial arts. As a matter of fact, one of the most common forms of martial arts is Tai Chi. Again; most people would not consider Tai Chi a martial art, because its movements are very slow and precise. However, what most people may not realize is that Tai Chi movements are forms of martial arts striking poses as well as defense opposes, just slowed down.

When it comes to Chi, which many Asian cultures consider a person's inner and mental energy, and its relation to martial arts, the process of breathing and various techniques help center your abdominal core and accumulate your body's energy and higher capacities initiate additional power and strength, regardless of a person's size. Anyone interested in martial arts should understand the importance of Chi in any form of exercise or hand-to-hand combat fighting. In various forms of Chinese martial arts, including kung fu, the purpose is to build up a person's Chi to a certain level as well is to improve the quality of that person's Chi.

While the practice of Zen, or qigong, as it is more commonly known, is to purify not only the mind toward higher concentration, but to allow the person's Chi to reach a maximum strength and efficiency, such practice, it is believed, activates brain cells to a more highly energized state.

As Tai Chi can be considered a form of Zen martial arts, it is one of the most popular among those who wish to learn a martial art form that does not require boundless energy and striking poses to start. However, even beginners to Zen martial arts and such forms of Tai Chi are commonly surprised at how strenuous it can be. While the moves may be performed in a slower manner than in other martial arts forms, concentration, effort, and proper body techniques provide an invigorating workout for most age groups. As a matter of fact, Zen martial arts like Tai Chi are highly recommended for middle-aged to older adults who wish to continue increasing strength, balance, and muscle tone regardless of physical condition.
